Public higher education in California took another big reduction in the 2011-12 state budget. Funding for UC was reduced $650 million and could be reduced a total of $750 million if tax revenue projections aren’t met. State support for UC has fallen from $3.25 billion in 2007-08 to $2.37 billion today. Programs have been reduced and student tuition has increased as a result.
The cuts must stop, and California must develop a plan to stabilize long-term support for higher education. Preserving excellence and accessibility in the UC system is central to California’s economic future and the opportunities that will be available for its people.
